Job SummaryIn collaboration with the Respiratory Care Supervisor, is responsible for clinical guidance, leadership, and competence of respiratory care staff. Provides staff orientation and education and directs student activities during the shift. Delivers routine and critical respiratory care and ensures all patient care is completed appropriately during the shift.Responsibilities• Assess shift workload volumes, staffing needs, staff qualifications and other appropriate factors. Make assignments accordingly for both critical and general care areas. Reassess throughout the shift and adjusts accordingly.• Assess staff performance in quality/quantity of work in an ongoing manner. Assure policy and procedure compliance. Act as a clinical resource for staff and give feedback and assistance to staff as needed.• Serves as a focal point for collaborating with nursing and physicians to resolve patient care issues that may arise. Provides expert assistance in unusual or critical/emergent situations involving life support decisions and actions.• Provides orientation and education to both new and current employees. Oversees student clinical rotations to provide successful learning experiences.• Assists with employee work schedule development, performance management process and time record procedures as delegated by the department supervisor.• Ensures staff completion of all beginning and end of shift responsibilities. Participates in department communication efforts, including huddles and staff meetings. Serves as performance improvement and TCT resource.• Demonstrates positive and professional customer service and co-worker relations.• Provide basic and advance respiratory care to patients in critical care settings, and evaluate patient response to therapy. Perform patient assessments and recommend therapeutic goals and therapies.• Participate in multidisciplinary patient care activities and provide evaluation and communication of respiratory care plans.• Demonstrate competency and ability in providing respiratory care to neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients per department policy and procedures.• Demonstrates competencies and responsible for the safe and effective administration of all respiratory care procedures and for the proper functioning of all respiratory care equipment.• Serves as student clinical instructor when applicable.• Demonstrates ability to rotate to other hospitals to perform routine respiratory care.• All other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesPatient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact)The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.Competency StatementMust demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.Common Duties and Responsibilities(Essential duties common to all positions)1.
