Job Purpose & Position Overview The Doctor of Optometry is a contract position located at the Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System. This position provides direct patient optometric health care serving as an expert professional optometry resource to provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive, and therapeutic medical optometric care to individuals across the spectrum of age and development within a high risk population.Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: Serves as an eye care provider for the Health Care Facility by performing the full range of professional optometric duties with major emphasis in the pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and management of cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and pars plana vitrectomy patients with the assistance of ophthalmologists. Examines, diagnosis, treats diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well, as diagnosis related systemic conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, diagnosis and medical treatment of eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, iritis, episcleritis, blepharitis, glaucoma, epithelial defects, recurrent erosions, complications of refractive surgery, etc., and eye injuries such as corneal abrasions, ocular foreign bodies, chemical and thermal burns of the eye. Evaluation and management of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration until ophthalmologic surgical intervention is required. This requires an advanced professional knowledge and appropriate application of advanced instrumentation/imaging, advanced optometric procedures, diagnostic drugs, therapeutic drugs, evaluation and management of patients, and advanced medical management of eye disease and injury. Performs comprehensive visual and ocular examinations on all types of patients; including, but not limited to refractive surgery patients, post-surgical cataract patients, pediatric patients, adult patients, geriatric patients, learning disability patients, low vision patients, and patients who work in eye hazardous occupations. Provides the proper diagnosis, management, and treatment of all patients that are within the scope of optometric practice and credentials. Performs and evaluates all necessary tests that deal with the eye portion of all types of physical exams, including commercial drivers license physicals. Diagnosis and treats any visual anomaly and pathologic conditions of the ocular adnexa and the eye that are within the optometric scope of practice. Performs a wide range of tests to include the use of diagnostic drugs or any clinically approved method for the evaluation of the visual system Treats pathology and injuries of the eye and adnexa using therapeutic drugs. Performance of minor surgical procedures including, but not limited to, anterior segment foreign body removal, corneal debridement, and suture removal. Removes foreign bodies from ocular surfaces and anterior tissue. Co-manages complicated patients with ophthalmology. Provides eye and vision consultative services to the medical staff and others as needed. Serves as an authoritative source of information in the areas of eye, vision, corrective and protective eyewear, occupational vision, vision readiness, and optometry. Refers patients for consultation to other health care providers when appropriate. Fully responsible for the detection and correction of unusual visual deficiencies, as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease states and disorder of the visual system, the eye, associated structures and related systemic conditions, providing state of art treatment for all pertinent ocular pathological and physiological conditions. Complex conditions such as keratoconus, cataracts, glaucoma, anterior segment diseases, strabismus, binocular dysfunction, macular degeneration, retinal pathology, diabetic retinal exams and other complex conditions will be managed. Provides community based screening programs including Head Start and kindergarten school screenings and screenings for diabetic retinopathy Keeps timely and appropriate medical records in compliance with professional, hospital and other applicable guidelines. Required Qualifications/Skills: Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) accredited by the Council on Optometry. This requirement includes advanced professional knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of optometric clinical services. Current license to practice optometry in a state, the district of Columbia, or a territory is required. Completion of a ASHP or hospital or ambulatory optometry residency is preferred. Documented credentials and privileges by the Medical Staff are required, prior to conducting optometry clinics. Ability to interpret diagnostic tests and perform procedures and to analyze data in order to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings, communicate results and to identify all stages of ocular problems and ocular disease states, make appropriate diagnosis and implement or modify treatment. Knowledge and understanding of advanced optometric procedures and instrumentation techniques and their various applications in the detection and correction of unusual ocular disease and visual deficiencies. Knowledge of pharmacological agents and their uses. Knowledge of emergency ocular treatment. Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication is required. Skill in researching and evaluating, complex medical optometric information. Supervisory Responsibilities: NoTraining Requirements: Doctor of Optometry. Completion of an Optometry residency is preferred. Physical Requirements: Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment. While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
