This role combines market strategy, client relationship management, and project leadership to win and grow work for hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. The Associate Principal will shape pursuit strategies, develop high-impact proposals, coordinate cross-disciplinary teams, and serve as a visible industry representative to expand our presence in the healthcare sector.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and implement business development strategy for the healthcare practice to achieve revenue and market-share targets.Identify, qualify, and prioritize pursuit opportunities for hospitals, clinics, ambulatory care, and other healthcare projects.Cultivate and sustain strong relationships with health system executives, facility planners, project directors, and other key decision-makers.Lead and coordinate the preparation of proposals, presentations, and interviews, ensuring clear value propositions, fees, and delivery strategies.Collaborate with design, technical, and project delivery teams to align capabilities with client needs and to craft responsive, technically informed proposals.Serve as a practice leader and external ambassadorrepresent the firm at industry conferences, client events, and professional organizations.Develop pursuit plans, win strategies, and tailored marketing materials including RFP responses, qualifications packages, and targeted thought leadership.Mentor and develop staff by providing coaching on client engagement, proposal development, and practice growth techniques.Manage pursuit budgets, schedules, and internal resources for major qualifications and interview processes.Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and policy/regulatory changes affecting healthcare facility planning and design to inform business strategy.Negotiate scopes, terms, and agreements in collaboration with senior leadership and the contracts team to close opportunities.Track business development metrics and report progress to practice leadership, refining approaches based on results.QualificationsBachelors or Masters degree in Architecture, Design, or a related field; advanced business degree (MBA) or certificates in healthcare planning is a plus.Licensed Architect and/or AIA membership preferred; equivalent professional registration and strong standing in the profession acceptable.8+ years of progressive business development experience in architecture or design firms with a minimum of 5 years focused on healthcare (hospitals, clinics, ambulatory care).Proven track record of winning healthcare projects and leading successful pursuits from qualification through contract execution.Experience in principal- or director-level roles (Associate Principal, Project Director, Principal) with demonstrated leadership and client stewardship.Strong understanding of healthcare planning, codes, clinical adjacencies, and facility types (e.g., hospitals, outpatient clinics, diagnostic centers).Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and negotiation skills; comfortable interfacing with executive-level clients and internal leadership.Financial acumen with experience preparing fee proposals, understanding project profitability drivers, and managing pursuit budgets.Familiarity with CRM systems, proposal development tools, and industry resources; proficiency with Microsoft Office and presentation platforms.Willingness to travel for client meetings, conferences, and site visits as required.Demonstrated ability to mentor teams, build internal alignment, and drive cross-disciplinary collaboration.BenefitsCompetitive salaryHybrid work scheduleBonuses401kPTOSick timeVacation
