The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) invites applications for a part-time, grant-funded Undergraduate Research Assistant. This position will receive biomedical research training for Summer 2025 and will perform both field and lab work for a specific research project. This position will learn field sample techniques, have an introduction to botany and ecology, and learn about water science. In lab, the position will learn microbiological techniques and molecular lab skills. The individual will be encouraged to present findings at the end of their summer program, providing valuable experiences needed to advance their science and research career. This position reports to the grant's Principal Investigator (PI). This position is grant-funded and is subject to ongoing funding. This is a part-time position and is non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Hourly rate will be $16.07. This position shall not to exceed 150 hours per month for up to 12 weeks (3 months) in the Summer of 2026. The schedule for this position will be established between the PI and the employee and approved given the needs of the project and grant requirements. This position is not eligible for benefits. Education/Knowledge Minimum Education High School or GED Required Licenses/Certification Skills Required Education and Experience: The position requires the individual to be currently seeking an undergraduate degree in a field of basic or biomedical sciences and does not require experience. Training will be provided. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of scientific, experimental and research techniques applicable to the area of science involved (i.e. microbiology, physiology, cell and molecular biology, etc.); * Knowledge of the area of science in which the work is to be performed; * Knowledge of contemporary research methods, data collection and analysis skill; * Ability to be trained in the use of complex laboratory/field instruments and equipment; * Ability to learn protocols of assigned research projects Duties and Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities * Learn and implement written scientific protocols to conduct experiments, collect data, and compile reports for a specific research project. * Maintain a safe, clean laboratory setting by conducting experiments and other procedures according to established departmental and laboratory policies and procedures. * Follow established objectives and quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control standards. * Maintain accurate and comprehensive records on all experiments personally conducted and organize these records so that they can be retrieved by the investigator. * Prepare reagents, media, and solutions to prepare/maintain specimens for analysis. * Ensure responsible conduct of research and research integrity for all activities. * Follow all rules and regulations established for the safe operation of the laboratory and protection of staff, including completing all relevant training programs such as the Hazardous Waste Management Program. * Learn to operate standard laboratory equipment. * Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
