Job Description

Forest Preserve District of Cook County Job Summary Under the supervision and direction of the Regional Superintendent and Division Superintendent, assists in the operations, administrative reporting and maintenance of a geographical division of the District. Ensure that all grounds and facilities meet a high level of standards in providing a clean and safe environment for the general public. Assists in the supervision and coordination of field personnel, daily work plans and their scheduling. Inspects, ensures and trains proper and safe usage and maintenance of District vehicles and equipment. Knowledge and ability to apply personnel policies and procedures of the District and the department, including disciplinary and grievance procedures. Maintains all necessary personnel and division-related documents and files. Prepares and submits accurate administrative reports using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook in a timely manner. Represents and performs as liaison for the department in internal and external meetings or events when assigned. Assists the District when needed in providing support of firefighting and suppression. Typical Duties Assists the Division Superintendent in preparing work schedules, daily work plans and assigns work crews and office personnel to various duties. Supervises field work, including, but not limited to, cleaning up and disposing refuse and illegal dumps; picking up litter; cleaning of shelters, picnic areas, restrooms and port-o-lets; mowing and trimming of public use areas; tree pruning; trail maintenance; pothole repair; sign replacement and repair; fence repair and installation. Supervises and organizes snow removal, plowing, shoveling, brining and salt spreading within the Division. Train personnel in the proper and safe operation and maintenance of all maintenance equipment and tasks. Performs daily inspection of Division grounds and facilities to determine and plan for improvements and repairs. Performs inspections and inventory of the division's fleet, equipment, tools and supplies. Maintains professional, accurate and consistent oral and electronic communication with management, administrative and field personnel to ensure that projects and assignments are being completed as planned. Onboards/offboards new employees; this includes providing training and familiarizing the employee with the division and staff. Generate daily, weekly and monthly reports for the Landscape Maintenance Office using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook). Consults with Facilities and Fleet Management team regarding divisional concerns and/or projects and fleet matters; fills out work orders for repairs and requisitions for supplies. Provides great customer service, greeting permit holders and other preserve users and responds to their inquiries or concerns within a timely manner. Communicates with Forest Preserve Law Enforcement team on security and/or vandalism concerns. Registers, tracks hours and maintains court-related documents for the District's Community Service Work Program, which includes training and monitoring community service/adult probation workers in the field. Attend mandatory and suggested continued education training essential to the position., i.e. CPR/First Aid, Defensive Driving, NSC Accident Investigation, etc. Attend court hearings to testify in matters when violations/fines will be issued to offenders related to District vandalism and/or damage. Minimum Qualifications Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher. Must possess at least 4 years of full-time work experience in the field of landscape maintenance operations or in a substantially similar area Must possess at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a supervisory capacity OR worked at least 3 years in the title of Serviceman at the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Must possess a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License with no Air Brakes restriction. Preferred Qualifications Possess at least 1 season of work experience with the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC); OR at least 1 season of work experience with FPCC partners such as the Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Chicago Botanic Garden, Greencorps Chicago; Friends of the Forest Preserves, the Student Conservation Association, Cook County, the City of Chicago, or the Chicago Park District OR Possess a Chainsaw Feller I Certification or State of Illinois Pesticide Applicator/ Operator License Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Ability to plan, organize, supervise, direct and evaluate work of department employees. Ability to foster employee development through coaching and feedback. Knowledge and ability in the operations of the department and District policies and procedures. Skill and ability to communicate with professionalism to diverse groups. Ability to train personnel in the proper operation and maintenance of all maintenance equipment. Ability to manage a large fleet and coordinate maintenance and repairs to ensure operations continue to flow efficiently. Knowledge and ability to apply pesticides. Ability to keep abreast of community trends and developments through personal observation and study. Knowledge and ability to communicate plans throughout the levels of rank and title. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Ability to follow and ensure implementation of established safety rules and procedures. Ability to follow instructions and relate well to others. Ability to maintain written and computerized records as required, perform measurements or other routine computations. Ability to operate Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism while supervising and interacting with employees and while interacting with the general public and other District personnel. Ability to maintain confidentiality in management-related and personnel matters and information. Ability to withstand various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to, climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving objects of up to 50 pounds.
