The Director of Nursing work under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer or a designee, he/she assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services. His/her responsibilities are carried out within the framework of the Hospital By-Laws, the Mission and Vision statements, policies and procedures, all regulatory (JCAHO, NYSDOH, NYCDOAH and professional organizational standards.SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Director of Nursing will coordinate all patient care and operational activities and has twenty-four (24) hour responsibility for patient care areas.NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which promotes customer service and enhances and furthers the hospital's Mission, Vision and Value statement.Patient Care Management/Unit OperationsCollaborates with other Directors of Nursing in planning and developing programs to improve patient care and employee performance.Periodically monitors employee's performance relative to patient care and nursing practice, e.g. compliance to policy/procedures relative to patient care assignments and the related documentation, narcotic count, code cart assessment sheet, medication administration and documentation, etc.Communicates patient care and service related problems on the tour to appropriate individuals timely. Assists in corrective actions/follow-up.Makes frequent, purposeful rounds with/without Nurse Managers of service to assess units.Evaluates staffing plan and ensures that staffing is adequate to meet patient care needs.Collaborates with peers and Nurse Managers in developing mechanisms that improves continuous feedback relative to the current status of patient care/nursing practice issues in order to comply with hospital policy/procedure, regulatory agency mandates and standards.Meets frequently with peers (nursing leaders/personnel) in order to:Maintain open channels of communication.Explore resolutions to problems.Review/analyze quality improvement reports and effectiveness of corrective action plans/follow-up.Periodically assess/review the master staffing plan.Review customer service/patient satisfaction patterns.Reviews status of disciplinary process of chronically absent/late employees.Reviews annual and probationary evaluations of all nursing personnel on assigned tours.Writes annual performance evaluations for Nurse Managers and reviews with associates.Periodically apprises Nurse Managers of performance.Communicates orally and in writing any problematic issues with other associate directors timely.Is familiar with hospital/nursing policies and procedures/standards of practice.Interprets policies/procedures for staff, when indicated.Communicates to staff all new directives/policies timely.Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, as assigned, or independently.Sets up meetings to address/resolve problems on assigned tour.Promotes nurse/physician collaboration.Develops an effective record keeping system and forecasting, which should include, but not limited to:Medication errors/counseling on assigned tour.Minutes of staff meetings.Performance improvement findingsIncidents/occurrences.Patient complaints.Attendance profile cardsParticipates in labor relations sessions, when indicated.Actively participates in preparation for all surveys by regulatory agencies e.g. JCAHO, DOH, OMH, as applicable. Directs staff in preparing for surveys.Communicates orally and in writing to superior findings and recommendations for assigned service(s).Chairs/attends standards or ad hoc committees as assigned or expressed interest. Participates in interviewing transfers or new hires for assigned tour.Reports/records unusual occurrences to superior, as soon as possible.Acts as a patient advocate when diplomacy and tact are needed, in tense situations or routinely.Meets periodically (or as indicated) with Chiefs of Service or designee, Department Heads, to collaborate in resolving patient care issues that impact on patient care/unit operations.Adheres to HHC absenteeism/lateness policy and proceduresMakes environmental rounds in all assigned areas, completes rounds checklist and implements immediate follow-up on environmental issues in an attempt for resolution.Communicates with Public Affairs and Community on issues involving media inquiry.Communicates with Medical Director when a request is made for EMS Diversion prior to calling a diversion.Contacts engineering, MIS Key Control when there are systems, repair and access issues requiring immediate attention.Follows-up on patient/family complaints in an attempt for resolution.Prepares written summary reports of all issues and activities to immediate supervisor.Acts as a resource person to nursing personnel and other disciplines on assigned tour, in interpreting/enforcing nursing policies/procedures.Consults with nursing leaders and continuing education staff in planning educational activities for all levels of nursing personnel.Enforces staff attendance at mandated programs.Performs other duties as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,3. A satisfactory equivalent.
