Position Summary The Histotechnologist I processes surgical, autopsy, and study specimens for pathologic diagnosis. Responsibilities include tissue fixation, processing, freezing, microtomy, frozen sectioning, and staining slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Responsibilities • Performs basic histotechnology staining techniques. • Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining specimens. • Uses the laboratory computer system to add, cancel, and verify completed orders. • Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures. • Troubleshoots instruments, processing, and staining processes. • Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed. • Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply. • Receives and processes specimens, answers the telephone, and greets guests to the department. • Reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager, and/or Pathologist, and documents discrepancies and their resolutions. • Assumes at least one of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech in charge, reagent validations, or evaluation of new technology. • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures Qualifications Education/Training • Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred. • Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology is required.
