Duties and Responsibilities * *Responsible for the daily operation of the Soil testing and Plant Tissue (Feed and Forage) testing services that the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) provides to farmers, other stakeholders, and researchers. * *Performs laboratory analyses of plant material, feeds, and forages. This includes all procedures involved in preparation of standards, sample preparation, and the operation and recording of results from the analytical instruments. * *Performs laboratory analyses of soil samples using specialized equipment (e.g. ICP) to assess carbon and nitrogen, other nutrients, metals, and various soil health metrics. * *Trains and supervises undergraduate and graduate student assistants in routine sample preparation and analyses. * *Maintain analytical instruments; perform routine preventive maintenance procedures, arrange for repair or servicing of instruments, order replacement parts, and maintain maintenance and service records. * Maintain adequate laboratory supplies. * *Compile and summarize data and prepare reports on the results and laboratory services provided for timely delivery to clients. Conduct literature searches and research on current related projects and on new modified techniques and procedures. * *Conduct appropriate analytical test as part of a quality control program to establish and check on the reliability and accuracy of all analytical procedures. * *Work cooperatively with other professional staff members in developing and adapting new analytical techniques and procedures to improve laboratory efficiency and productivity. * Other duties as assigned. * Denotes essential functions Minimum Qualifications * Possession of a baccalaureate degree in soil science, chemistry, biology, or related field, and 3 years of progressively professional experience with responsibilities for nutrient analysis of soil, plant, material, feeds, water, or tissue nutrient, or analytical laboratory procedures; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. * Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of methods and procedures utilized in the elemental analysis of plant tissue, feed, soil, water and other biological material, and skill in the use of appropriate laboratory equipment as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. * Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with nutrient analysis of soil, plant, material, feeds, water, or tissue nutrient, and or analytical laboratory procedures. * Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. * Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. * Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. * Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software. * If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Supplemental Minimum Qualifications * Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures, and techniques utilized in spectroscopy and skill in the use of related spectroscopic analytical instruments. * Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and to communicate complex oral communication to co-workers or subordinates and to review their performance. * Ability to conduct literature searches or to consult on analytical methods with other professionals. * Knowledge of the practical and potential value of research and experimentation in the field involved. * Ability to participate in the analysis and evaluation of existing techniques and procedures and to assist in the development of new ones. * Ability to observe, to analyze, and to report the results of research and experimentation. * Ability to organize laboratory functions into routine procedures. Desirable Qualifications * Familiarity with ICP-AES, NIR, and AA spectroscopic instruments and proximate analyses of feed and forage.
