Description of Work: Primary duties for this position include coverage responsibilities for the Aquarium's full-time sea turtle rehabilitation staff. The sea turtle rehabilitation technician will also be responsible for assisting, as needed, all aquarists, herpetologists, horticulturists and aviculturists in a variety of tasks revolving around the care and maintenance of the many fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds at the Aquarium. The position will perform the following essential functions under the supervision of the Curatorial staff: * Maintain and clean exhibits, holding tanks and work areas. * Complete daily observations and maintain daily & long-term records of all husbandry and veterinary care. * Assist in planning, preparation and feeding of daily diets. * Collaborate with veterinary staff to determine rehab patient needs & assist with or perform medical care as directed by veterinarians. * Supervise and train volunteers in sea turtle husbandry. * Become comfortable with basic laboratory equipment to assist with diagnostic sample preparation and routine water quality analysis. * Work on-call shifts to admit rehab patients and/or respond to emergencies. * Interact with and educate visitors during scheduled and impromptu programming. * Understand state and federal permit regulations, stranding network forms, species identification, and basic sea turtle life history and anatomy. * Assist with and responding to stranding events, animal rescues, and providing rehabilitation services to stranded sea turtles, and potentially other aquatic animals as necessary. * SCUBA certification from a nationally recognized organization preferred but not required. Additional duties as assigned Job Requirements: This position may require work in hot, cold, humid, wet and outdoor conditions. This position may require lifting heavy items (approximately 50 pounds), climbing ladders, swimming, and bending up and down. This position will require weekend, evening, and holiday work, and this position is expected to be on-call during some evenings and weekends. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license. Management Preferences: * Experience working in aquatic or terrestrial animal husbandry. * Training or experience in maintaining life support systems or associated water chemistry. * SCUBA certification from a nationally recognized organization preferred but not required.
