The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to, collecting patient information, issuing medical files, filing medical records, and processing resident admissions and discharge papers. To be successful, the Medical Records Specialist should have knowledge of medical terminology, processes, and administrative duties. The MRS should also demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.Medical Records Specialist Major Duties and Responsibilities:Responsible for the collection, processing, filing, maintenance, storage, retrieval, and distribution of medical records according to facility policies and proceduresResponsible for collection and filing/scanning in medical record of all laboratories, pathology, EKG, x-ray reports received prior/postdate of surgery and of all appropriate correspondencesIf applicable, arranges all chart forms, correspondence, reports in appropriate order per facility policy/proceduresResponsible for marking and obtaining all necessary signatures to complete chart, including contacting physician's offices regarding necessary signatures and/or reportsResponsible for obtaining all missing chart contents needed to complete medical recordsArrange for appropriate disposal of medical records per facility policies/proceduresGather patient demographic and personal informationHelp with departmental audits and investigationsDistribute medical charts to the appropriate departments of the facilityMaintain quality and accurate records by following facility proceduresMedical Records Specialist Education and Experience:Highschool diploma or equivalent qualificationA minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role preferredUnderstanding of medical terminology and administration processesProficient in information management programs and MS OfficeOutstanding communication and interpersonal abilitiesStrong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
