Developing and educating the next generation of exceptional health care professionals.With more than 100 locations in hospital-based clinics, outpatient health and specialty care centers, we provide the most advanced medicine and thoughtful, patient-centric care to the greater metro-Detroit community.Job Summary:The Ophthalmic Technician assists Physicians with diagnostic testing, examination, education, and treatment of patients.Job Description:Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Greet and escort patients to examination rooms; obtain patient consents and insurance informationEscort patients to and from various destinations; assist patients in and out of examination chairsObtain ocular, medical and family histories; document/update accurately in patients' electronic medical recordExplain procedures to patientsPerform initial patient examinations by measuring, comparing and testing pupils including visual acuity, extraocular movements, eye pressure, color vision, etc.Perform automated and manual testing procedures including corneal topography, autorefraction, application, contrast sensitivity, tonometry, Goldman and Humphrey visual fields, Optical Coherence Tomography, A-Scans and B-Scans, etc. as directed by the physiciansAdminister anesthetics, dilation drops, ointments and medications as directed by the physiciansAssist physicians with minor surgery and patient monitoringComplete paperwork for physiciansProvide information and educational materials to patients concerning procedures and surgeriesParticipate in patient follow-up activities; assist patients with scheduling appointments and verify surgery schedulesMaintain and clean equipment and examination rooms and working areas; stock rooms and/or order suppliesAnswer and triage patient telephone callsEstablish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or practiceQualifications:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.Education and/or Experience:High School Diploma or GEDCertification as an Ophthalmic AssistantRetina scoping experience preferred1-3 years experience in an Ophthalmology practice preferredPatient care experience requiredKnowledge of Ophthalmology terminology, eye anatomy and medical terminologySkills and Abilities Required:Accurate refraction and applanation skillsGood written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively (face-to-face, telephone and electronic)Good analytical and judgment skillsAbility to use computer software programs and systemsAbility to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and/or financial dataExcellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage timeSafety Requirements:Compliance with departmental Health and Safety policies and proceduresMandatory TB test annually (based on Department guidelines)Work Schedule:40-hour workweekHours and days to be determined by the business needs of the departmentMay require to travel to off-site locationsMay require on-call duty and the ability to work outside of scheduled work hours, such as Saturday hours when the need arisesWayne Health is an EEO/AA/Veteran/Disability Employer
