Job Description: Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Success and Support, the Student Success Coach is responsible for working with first-year students to ensure a successful transition to college, educating them about university-wide expectations and resources, and guiding them through a process of developing individualized plans for success. Primary responsibilities include providing comprehensive, regular, and proactive academic and transitional support through developmentally-appropriate advising that holistically supports the student in all aspects of their lives - academic, personal, social, and career. The Student Success Coach will support students when facing academic, financial, or personal challenges, make referrals as appropriate and engage in ongoing contact with faculty and staff as needed. The coach also assists with the delivery of activities and programs for first-year students that promote a sense of belonging and connection to their peers, to McDaniel College, and to the community.Responsibilities:Provide holistic, comprehensive, proactive academic and transitional advising support to incoming first-year students.Promote students' understanding of the academic requirements needed for successful degree completion and assist students with developing long-term academic plans and individual semester schedules.Monitor the progress of first-year students and ensure appropriate follow-up action with regard to matters including, but not limited to, attendance verification, mid-term grades, and registrationMotivate students to take ownership of their own academic success and help students to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success. Co-create a holistic academic success plan with students.Help students focus on developing individual goals and identifying steps to reach those goals.Assist with activities and programming designed to meet the unique academic and social/emotional needs of first-year students.Create, coordinate and deliver workshop series on various academic and student success topics, including time management, organization, reading, note-taking and study strategies, and other academic processes and policies.Connect first-year students to campus resources (such as Center for Experience and Opportunity, Office of Student Engagement, Wellness Center, the Writing and STEM Centers, Student Accessibility Support Services, Library, Registrar's Office, Financial Aid, Bursar's Office, Residence Life, or other services) and act as a liaison to all relevant internal and external resources.Establish effective partnerships and work collaboratively with campus colleagues to support student success and retention initiatives.Maintain confidential records, collect data, and prepare reports related to the functions of advising, planning, evaluation, and assessment as directed.Ensure adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and regulations.Participate in university events related to recruiting, alumni relations, and orientation (e.g. Open Houses, Scholars on the Hill, Homecoming, McDaniel Local - New Student Registration, New Student Orientation, etc.).Attend relevant professional development activities and programming.Provide assistance and support for Academic Life and Student Success initiatives, particularly those related to success coaching.Maintain active memberships and participation in relevant professional organizations at the local, regional, and/or national levels (e.g. NACADA, the National Academic Advising Association, etc.).Requirements: Master's degree in education, counseling, student personnel/development, or a related field plus 2-3 years of experience in academic support, advising, retention, transitional, or related programs in a college setting required.Knowledgeable about best practices in college transition/retention and late adolescent development (including social and emotional development).Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion, and maintain integrity with handling sensitive and confidential information; operate in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse populations.Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment, to perform effectively with fluctuating workload, and to meet established deadlines.Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to students and to all members of the campus community.Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying academic policies.Self-motivated, flexible, and possessing a strong work ethic.Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, student records systems, early alert monitoring systems, social media and web communications, and database systems.
