Hunger Free America National AmeriCorps VISTA member Hunger Free America (HFA), in conjunction with some of the nation's most effective anti-hunger and poverty organizations. Hunger Free America is a nonpartisan, national nonprofit group working to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food. Our National AmeriCorps VISTA program is one of organization's cornerstone programs. For over twenty years, we have placed AmerCorps VISTAs with food security organizations across the country. Currently, we place 38 AmeriCorps VISTA member, nationwide. Our program engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in moving families beyond the soup kitchen by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods. HFA's VISTA program aims to address hunger, poverty, and build the capacity of the agencies that address these issues. AmeriCorp VISTA members help improve access to food from government and nonprofit sources for targeted populations in particular and food insecure people in general; help raise and sustain funding for critical food security efforts, enable residents of food deserts to access healthier foods through farmers markets and community gardens; more low-income children to obtain free school breakfasts and summer meals; effective nonprofit groups fighting hunger and poverty to raise more money and recruit and manage more volunteers, particularly high-impact and skilled volunteers. Member Duties : Here are some of the activities that VISTA members could perform with our partnered anti-hunger host sites: Community education and outreach (building partnerships and coalitions with organizations that support food security work, developing nutrition programming, increasing access to farmer's markets); Fund development (grant writing, soliciting in-kind donations, running special events); Volunteer recruitment and management; Building organizational capacity; Increasing access to SNAP and other food benefits programs, and helping people meet SNAP work requirements.
