OverviewVolunteer Bookkeeper "” San Quentin SkunkWorksSan Quentin SkunkWorks is an incarcerated-led innovation lab partnering with the Governor's Office, world-class coaches, educators, and visionaries to reshape the future of justice reform. Our work has been featured on the front page of the LA Times and profiled by CalMatters as a model for system-wide transformation. We're proving that incarcerated creators aren't the subjects of reform "” they're the architects of it.As our partnerships grow and new initiatives launch, strong financial infrastructure is essential to sustaining that trust. We/'re looking for an experienced volunteer bookkeeper to help us maintain it.The RoleYou/'ll manage San Quentin SkunkWorks' books "” about 4-6 hours per month, flexible, and remote-friendly (with the option to visit San Quentin if you/'d like to see the work firsthand). You/'ll report directly to the Executive Director and help reconcile accounts, support monthly reporting, and keep us audit-ready so our team can stay focused on changing prison culture.What you/'ll doReconcile accounts and track expenses in QuickBooks Online / ExcelSupport monthly reporting and board-ready financialsKeep us compliant and audit-readyBuild the financial backbone behind every breakthroughWhat You BringYou understand that clean books are the backbone of a trusted nonprofit. You take accuracy, documentation, and financial transparency seriously because you know they make everything else possible. You/'re comfortable managing the books for a small but growing nonprofit and can maintain reliable financial records with minimal oversight.Ideally, you bring5+ years of bookkeeping or accounting experience supporting a nonprofit, small business, or mission-driven organizationStrong proficiency in QuickBooks Online, including reconciliations, chart of accounts management, and financial reportingExperience performing monthly bank and credit card reconciliations and maintaining accurate expense categorizationComfort preparing monthly financial reports (P&L, balance sheet, budget vs. actual) for leadership or board reviewFamiliarity with nonprofit accounting practices, including restricted funds and grant-related trackingStrong working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets for supporting financial analysis and reportingAbility to maintain clean documentation and audit-ready recordsHigh integrity and discretion when handling financial informationHelpful but not requiredExperience supporting Form 990 preparation or annual auditsExperience setting up or improving QuickBooks workflows and internal financial controlsPrior work with nonprofits in the $250K-$1M budget rangeThe ImpactYour work will ensure that our books remain accurate, transparent, and audit-ready "” so foundations, partners, and civic leaders can trust the integrity of the work being built inside San Quentin.
