Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District (FSSD) is currently seeking a candidate to fill an internship for outreach. This intern will work with a Senior Environmental Engineer in our outreach program. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands"‘on experience in pollution prevention, environmental protection, and community outreach. Candidate Profile Good communication skills, both written and verbal, for community outreach, coordination, and public speaking. Familiarity with web-based knowledge platforms. Social media experience for community outreach and coordination. Ability to communicate through storytelling to a wide audience. Organizational skills to coordinate community outreach events such as Coastal Cleanup and Earth Day Cleanup. Excellent interpersonal and multicultural skills - must be able to work well with a broad variety of cultures, disciplines, and backgrounds. Self"‘motivated and able to manage time and priorities to stay on task; knows when to reach out when help or questions are needed. Passion for learning, new experiences, and desire to work in an atmosphere of growth! Examples of Duties Social Media: Develop engaging content to promote the District's infrastructure, programs, and public education initiatives across various platforms. Community Events/Programs: Assist with outreach events and programs such as Earth Day, Coastal Cleanup, Farmers Market, School Programs, and other community events. Tasks include event coordination, logistics, promotion, and tabling. Public Outreach: Develop/distribute materials in support of pollution prevention efforts, Stormwater MRP, Solano Bayshore Resiliency Project, and District construction projects. Safety Communication: Assist with internal outreach and campaigns that promote a strong culture of workplace safety and employee well"‘being. Hours of Work This internship will be 15-20 hours per week, with a flexible schedule coordinated with the intern's mentor. Hybrid work is available, with a mix of onsite and remote days, if requested. The internship is limited to a maximum of 999 hours or one year, whichever comes first. Minimum Qualifications An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which has provided the required knowledge, skills/abilities, and attributes and is able to perform the work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). We are seeking an intern that is working toward or has obtained one of the following degrees in the last six (6) months: Civil, Environmental, or Water Resource Engineering Environmental Science Environmental Policy City-Urban Planning Public Administration Public Policy No experience is required for this opportunity but please list any relevant experience in the application. Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions Mobility and Dexterity: Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motion. Lifting, Carrying, Pushing and Pulling: Employees in this class will be exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Vision: Positions in this class require the employee to have close visual acuity, with or without correction, to prepare and analyze data and figures and to view a computer terminal. Hearing/Talking: Positions in this class require the employee to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels and to receive detailed information through oral communication. The employee must be able to exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Working Conditions: While some work will be in an office setting, visits to outdoor worksites will require the employee to work outside and be subject to a variety of weather conditions, walking on uneven terrain, and working around vehicles in operation and around machinery with moving parts. The employee may be required to operate a vehicle and thus will be subject to traffic hazards while driving. Work in a Wastewater Treatment Facility: Employees in this class will be working in a wastewater treatment facility and may be exposed to chemicals, toxic agents, blood and other bodily fluids, communicable diseases, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, restricted movement, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fuel, oil, gases, smoke, fumes, odors, pollens, dust, vibrations, and intense noises as well as field conditions including rainy, windy, cold, or hot weather. Working at Heights: Employees in this class may be required to work at heights 15 feet and more above the ground on equipment and structures. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations, absent undue hardship. Other Requirements Background Checks: The District may conduct a background check and a reference check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class. Independent Travel: Incumbents are required to travel independently, for example, to perform work at other work sites, to attend meetings with other District employees, to attend meetings with community organizations, etc. Must possess a valid Class C, CA State drivers license and insurance, and demonstrate a good driving record.
