Title: Associate Instructor (12th Grade Bootcamp) Department: SEO High School Scholars, New York Report to: Senior Manager, Teaching & Learning Compensation: $40/hr FLSA: Non-Exempt Employee Type: Part-Time, Seasonal Location: New York, NY Work Arrangement: This role requires on-site work at an SEO program site Hours: Averages 34 hours/week Schedule: 8:45am-3:00pm (Monday 8/10); 9:00am-2:15pm (Tues 8/11 - Fri 8/14, Mon 8/17 - Fri 8/21) ABOUT SEO Founded in 1963 during the Civil Rights Movement, SEO closes educational and career opportunity gaps for 7,000 ambitious young people annually. POSITION OVERVIEW Associate Instructors will join SEOu2019s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Associate Instructors co-teach alongside Instructors to facilitate classroom instruction, teach mini lessons, organize small group and one-on-one instruction, and provide additional Scholar support. Associate Instructors are the first to cover when there is an instructor absence and do not have grading responsibilities. Associate Instructors provide support and coverage for both Bootcamp Writing and Advisory courses and have a full-day schedule. Key Responsibilities: + Instruction & Facilitation u2013 Provide support and/or co-teach 3 to 4 periods including Writing and Advisory. When asked to cover for another instructor, lead the class on your own. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEOu2019s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement. Navigate Instructional Technologies u2013 Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Brightspace (Learning Management System), Nearpod, GSuite applications, and Zoom chat (instant messaging tool) in a Blended Learning environment.Content Preparation u2013 Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs. + Academic Support- Host open-door support sessions with Scholars who want to come in and review skills learned from class, make up missed work or lessons, or develop new skills. + Classroom Culture u2013 Maintain responsive & restorative approaches to promote studentsu2019 connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community. + Collaboration with SEO Staff and Instructors u2013 Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs and respond to all emails and Zoom chats in a timely manner. + Responsiveness to Coaching and Feedback u2013 Meet with your assigned instructional coach (Lead Instructor) at least twice during the semester to receive and implement feedback and recommendations from their classroom observations. Courses: Bootcamp (Summer) is an intensive 2-week program with a focus on college admissions for 12th grade Scholars. Associate Instructors will support both Writing and Advisory courses for 12th Grade Bootcamp: + Writing course: College Application Writing Part I + In this unit, Scholars will review previous college essay writing, learn more about the ins and outs of college essays and college level writing, and generate new material.They will solidify which personal statement they are moving forward with (a previous one or a new one), draft and revise it significantly, write a new supplement and collect supplement prompts, and create a plan for fall application essays. At the end of the course, they will share their strategy for completing writing in the fall semester in a brief presentation. + Advisory course: Bootcamp Advisory + Bootcamp is both a bridge between Scholars and the Fall semester and a launch pad for the college application season. In this unit, Scholars will learn more about the most crucial parts of the college research and application process so they can start finalizing their college list based on schools that are social, academic, and financial matches. They will complete 90% of the Common Application, make a list of at least 12 schools to apply to, and make a decision of what early pathway to take in the college process. Sites: Bootcamp takes place at this partner site: + LIU Brooklyn, (1 University Plaza, Brooklyn) Occasionally, Orientations and/or Friday Professional Development for all grade assignments will be held at the SEO Office: + 55 Exchange Place, New York, NY (Financial District) Dates: + Bootcamp Instructor Orientation: Tuesday, August 4, 5:00-7:00pm on Zoom + Bootcamp: 8/10-8/14, 8/17-8/21 2-SEMESTER PREFERENCE This role will also be available for the Fall Saturday Academy semester, which continues the focus on college admissions and application writing on a weekly basis with similar on-site requirements, daily schedule, responsibilities, and courses (College Application Writing Part II for all roles; Fall Advisory for Associate Instructors only). Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to both Boot Camp and Fall semesters. However, you may also apply for only one semester. Please indicate which you are applying for (both Boot Camp and Fall, only Boot Camp, or only Fall). Sites: Fall Saturday Academy takes place in person at the following sites: + LIU Brooklyn, (1 University Plaza, Brooklyn) + SEO Office (55 Exchange Place, New York, NY) Fall Dates: + Fall Instructor Orientation: Wednesday, September 2, 5:00-7:00pm on Zoom + Saturday Academy: 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24,10/31, 11/14, 11/21, 12/5, 12/12 + Writing Center and Application Workshops: There are some additional weekday afternoon/evening support workshops scheduled by instructor availability QUALIFICATIONS + Minimum of a Bacheloru2019s degree in content related field + Teaching certification, K-12 classroom teaching experience, and/or experience teaching at the college or university level + Expertise and depth of knowledge with college application writing, ELA curricula, high school writing curricula, or is in a graduate degree program for writing + This position requires the use of a reliable personal laptop. Seasonal instructors must have access to their own device that meets basic technology requirements to carry out all instructional and administrative duties. + Experience working with high school-aged students + Comfortable with navigating technological learning systems Preferred: + Expertise and depth of knowledge in the college admissions process and scholarship programs + Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy + Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) + Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Associate Instructors are compensated on a competitive hourly rate scale at $40/hour. This position averages 34 hours per week. The compensation listed reflects what SEO believes it will pay for this position at the time of this posting. Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and SEO reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
