Job Description The Nursing Assistant is an individual who functions in a support role to the Registered Professional Nurse by providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned. Qualifications u2022 High School Diploma or equivalent. u2022 Completed training as a medical assistant or nursing assistant or equivalent, with skills in venipuncture and EKG u2022 Prefer relevant experience in an inpatient health care setting. u2022 American Heart Association Heartsaver required/BLS Certification also accepted. Collective bargaining unit: SEIU 1199-MSH Responsibilities Clinical Practice u25cf Assists the nursing staff in performing selected nursing procedures, treatments, and functional tasks to specific patients including vital signs: Temperature, Pulse, Respirations, Blood Pressure and Pain Rating. u25cf Performs procedures associated with activities of daily living, ambulation, mobility, and personal hygiene of the patient. u25cf Observes, reports, and records routine and specific patient data, behaviors and responses to treatment on the appropriate flow sheet/EMR. u25cf Reports pertinent information and observations regarding patients to the registered nurse u25cf Performs procedures related to assuring a safe environment for patients, staff and others. u25cf Performs procedures associated with the admission, transfer and discharge of patients. u25cf Performs procedures associated with the maintenance of food and fluid intake. u25cf Documents Intake and Output in the Electronic Medical Record. u25cf Performs procedures associated with excretion of body waste and or loss of fluid. u25cf Provides for safe and comfortable lifting, positioning and ambulation of patients in accordance with the principles of good body mechanics. Utilizes mechanical devises as necessary u25cf Performs simple applications of heat and cold. u25cf Provides care to the body of deceased patients in preparation for removal to the morgue. Provides support to the family/significant others. Secures property. u25cf Obtains, assembles and maintains equipment for use during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. u25cf Assists members of the health care team with physical exam and other procedures. u25cf Conducts purposeful hourly care checks/rounding for assigned patients noting: Pain, Position, Proactive Toileting and Possessions u25cf Participates in the patient belonging process, including reporting of valuables to the RN and documenting accordingly. u25cf Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher or bed, and escorts ambulatory patients. u25cf Performs errands away from the area of assignment to implement the care of patients Including transporting stat specimens and/or obtaining supplies as necessary. u25cf Maintains a clean uncluttered and tidy environment. u25cf Maintains equipment and cleans as necessary. Stocks supplies. u25cf Works in a safe manner and provides for the safety of patients and other employees. u25cf Utilizes Vocera system/Mount Sinai phone according to sign in/sign out protocol where activated u25cf Maintains u201cisolation statusu201d for patients under direction of an RN and according to set procedures u25cf Utilizes aggression control measures in the care of patients who are verbally or physically threatening. u25cf Performs patient observation for safety, constant and/or every 20 minutes checks of assigned observation status. u25cf Communicates information and basic instructions to patients, families, and visitors u25cf Supports the mission, vision, philosophy and goals of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Health System. u25cf Attends ongoing staff development as assigned to maintain appropriate knowledge base and skills and to meet regulatory requirements. u25cf Attends unit staff and educational meetings. u25cf Demonstrates a humanistic, kind and caring attitude. u25cf Adheres to dress code in accordance with departmental policy. u25cf Maintains attendance and punctuality record in accordance with departmental standards. u25cf Demonstrates knowledge of Hospital and Departmental policy, procedure, and guidelines. u25cf Demonstrates knowledge of the Patient Bill of Rights and confidentiality. u25cf Is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and promotes an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity. u25cf Respects and values each patient's unique, individual needs, beliefs, and diversity and incorporates these into delivery of care. u25cf Assumes other responsibilities/duties as assigned.
