Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a busy diagnostic environment by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role ensures accurate specimen handling, labeling, and processing while providing clear, courteous communication to patients and supporting clinical staff with timely and precise laboratory services. Responsibilities + Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. + Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols. + Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity. + Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy. + Package specimens correctly for transport, following protocols for temperature, containers, and labeling. + Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol. + Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and processing, and make recommendations to improve workflow. + Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required to maintain a clean and safe work area. + Update and maintain accurate patient information in relevant systems. + Understand and fully interpret physiciansu2019 orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements. + Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner. + Attend required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance guidelines. Essential Skills + Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. + Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. + 2u20134 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role. + Proficiency in performing phlebotomy and blood draws, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. + Experience with sample collection for diagnostic laboratory testing, including blood draw and other specimen types. + Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders and protocols. + Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders. + Ability to follow established laboratory protocols for specimen handling, storage, and transport. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. + High School Diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a diagnostics laboratory environment or medical lab support role. + Experience as a lab assistant or in general laboratory support functions. + Familiarity with updating and managing patient information in laboratory or hospital systems. + Ability to read and communicate laboratory results clearly and professionally over the phone. + Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain procedures to patients in a calm and courteous manner. + Commitment to ongoing training and adherence to departmental and regulatory standards. Work Environment This role is based in a patient service center within a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting. You will work directly with patients for specimen collection and collaborate closely with laboratory and clinical staff. The environment requires consistent adherence to safety, decontamination, and regulatory protocols, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. Work involves frequent use of standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The setting emphasizes accuracy, patient interaction, and timely processing of specimens to support high-quality diagnostic services. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Knoxville, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
