DescriptionSummary ObjectiveThe purpose of this position is to inspect, service and repair air conditioning units, heat pumps, electric, oil and gas furnaces and heaters, and ventilating fans and electric motors. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.Examples of DutiesESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.Monitors inventory levels and orders parts, supplies, equipment, and spects wiring, fuses and circuit breakers to ensure there is adequate power to operate the air conditioning unit.Places air conditioning unit on support frame, secures and levels unit in position, and completes installation according to manufacturer's spects, services and repairs heat pumps, electric, oil and gas furnaces and heaters, and ventilating fans and electric motors.Cleans, services, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on window unit air conditioners and central air conditioning units in the shop and at department locations; and replaces filters, lubricates parts and adjusts controls.Discusses malfunctions and failures with department employees in order to identify the problem and necessary repairs.Examines malfunctioning unit, dismantles whole or parts of unit, repairs or replaces switches, fuses, relays, electrical wiring, copper tubing, fan motors, fans, thermostats, capacitors, compressors, evaporators and other components.Reassembles unit after testing and makes adjustments to ensure efficient jects Freon or other refrigerant into compressors to increase the level to the manufacturer's prescribed operating pressure standard.Verifies pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure their proper operation.Operates and uses multimeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter, amp meter, circuit tester, freon gauge, freon recovery equipment, vacuum pump, flaring tools, pipe bender, drills, gas and electric leak detectors, saws, grinders, vise, pliers, and stalls, inspects, services and repairs pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, air handlers, boilers, chillers, fan coils, duct work, any piping used for heating and cooling.Cleans coils, replaces and tightens belts, cleans and unstops drain pans on window unit air conditioners and central air conditioning units in the shop and at department locations.Performs related work as assigned.Minimum RequirementsMINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEu00a0REQUIREMENTSCertificate from a two-year vocational program: Heating, Ventilation and Airu00a0Conditioning.One (1) year of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems installation, maintenance, repair or inspection experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSMustu00a0beu00a0certifiedu00a0asu00a0au00a0Refrigerantu00a0Typeu00a0IIIu00a0oru00a0Universalu00a0Technicianu00a0byu00a0theu00a0ESCOu00a0Instituteu00a0asu00a0requiredu00a0by EPA regulations 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal historyu00a0check.Must complete the annual security awarenessu00a0training.Must possess and maintain a valid state driveru2019s license with an acceptable drivingu00a0history.PHYSICALu00a0DEMANDSPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and bodyu00a0movement.Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORKu00a0ENVIRONMENT)Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been volves routine and frequent exposureu00a0to:Bright/dim light; Dusts andu00a0pollen.Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humidu00a0conditions.Extreme noise levels,u00a0Animals/wildlife.Vibration; Fumes and/or noxiousu00a0odors.Traffic; Movingu00a0machinery.AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACTu00a0COMPLIANCEu00a0Louisville Metro Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
