University of Rochester: Office of the Provost: Academic Center: LLE-Laboratory for Laser Energ Salary Range or Pay Grade $82,500-$110,000 Description Assistant Scientist u2013 Experimental (Flying Focus Applications) The University of Rochester has exciting opportunities for early-career scientists to join the Ultrafast Plasma Photonics Group within the Plasma & Ultrafast Laser Science & Engineering (PULSE) Division at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). Recent advancements in short-pulse laser physicsu2014particularly the development of the flying focusu2014have opened new opportunities for laseru2013plasma applications. The ability to control the velocity of the laser focal region enables fundamentally new approaches to generating radiation probes with ultrashort-pulse lasers. This project will leverage these probes, together with novel long-wavelength, single-shot spectrometers, to diagnose plasmas under extreme conditions using joule-class laser systems. Experimental Position The successful candidate will lead the development of flying focusu2013based applications, with a specific emphasis on advancing capabilities relevant to stockpile stewardship. Responsibilities + Develop and execute experiments utilizing the flying focus for laseru2013plasma interaction studies + Advance radiation probe generation using ultrashort-pulse laser systems + Design and implement long-wavelength, single-shot spectrometers for diagnosing plasmas under extreme conditions + Analyze experimental data and collaborate closely with theory and modeling teams + Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences + Contribute to a collaborative research environment, including mentoring students and junior researchers About LLE and PULSE LLE provides a world-class environment for research in high-energy-density physics, inertial confinement fusion, and ultrafast laser science. The PULSE Division integrates experimental, theoretical, and computational efforts to advance laseru2013plasma interactions and develop next-generation diagnostic capabilities. Qualifications Qualifications Required: + Ph.D. in Physics, Plasma Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field + Experience in ultrafast lasers, laseru2013plasma interactions, or related experimental techniques + Strong background in experimental design, optics, and data analysis Preferred: + Experience with flying focus, structured light, or advanced pulse shaping + Familiarity with THz or long-wavelength radiation generation and diagnostics + Interest in or experience with high-energy-density physics or stockpile stewardship applications Application Instructions The applicant should submit: + a cover letter; + a curriculum vitae and a list of publications; + at least two letters of recommendation SALARY RANGE: $82,500 to $110,000 The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates are set within the job's compensation range, and determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
